Class Description

This introductory sewing course aims to nurture an appreciation for fashion, craftmanship, and cultural connectivity within the Hawaiian community. Through hands-on instruction, students will learn fundamental sewing techniques, tools, and materials while exploring the rich cultural significance of sewing in Hawaii. The course emphasizes skill-building, creativity, and the passing down of knowledge to enrich future generations.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. To introduce students to the basics of sewing, including machine operation, hand-sewing techniques, and essential tools.

  2. To explore the cultural relevance of sewing in Hawaiian history and traditions.

  3. To foster a sense of appreciation for craftsmanship and creativity in fashion design.

  4. To encourage the passing down of sewing skills and knowledge within the community.

 

Materials Required:

  • Sewing machines (provided by the instructor or students may bring their own).

  • Basic sewing tools: scissors, pins, needles, thread, measuring tape, fabric.

  • Hand-sewing supplies: embroidery floss, beads, appliqué materials (optional).

  • Reference materials on Hawaiian culture and traditional garment construction.

 

Note: This syllabus is adaptable and subject to modification based on the specific needs and skill levels of the students enrolled in the course. The overarching goal is to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment that celebrates the fusion of fashion, craft, and Hawaiian heritage.

·      Payment must be made at the time of registration

·      No refunds. If you are unable to make the scheduled class, we can reschedule for the next month’s class.
